How can I grow as a writer?

What Are Some Writing Tips You Can Share?

I don't believe there is one specific set of tips I can give. Each writer brings his/her own background, skills and talent into the mix. However, I will share some things that I use to sharpen my own writing. You can also find some links to great resources on the right column of this page. Here are my tips:

  • Join a writer's organization. Following this step will provide networking opportunities as well as information on conferences and workshops.
  • Find established writers who can be mentors. These people can be a wealth of advice and support.
  • Write daily! Even if it is a blog, journal or letters, write often. Practice really does make perfect.
  • Read often. Good Writers read a lot. I would say read a variety of genres and writing styles. If you write fiction, don't limit yourself to reading just fiction; read essays, non-fiction, and biographies.
  • Never listen to critics, especially in a critique group. It may cause uncessary panic. However, if more than one person is commenting on the same thing, it may be somthing worth noting.

Do You Have Any Books You Would Suggest Reading?

Yes, there are two books I think everyone should have, and only one is a suggested title.

  • On Writing by Steven King
  • Read a good book on style. There are a couple.
